Welcome to Manchester

Before your arrival into Manchester you will receive support on the Visa and Immigration process, including guidance on required documentation and expected timelines. Once your placement is confirmed, a personalised welcome pack will provide details on your programme, department and manager, as well as useful information about Manchester, accommodation and transport. Our meet and greet service at the airport ensures a friendly, seamless and guided start to your journey.

Understanding your new city

Settling into life in Manchester is important. We offer tours around local areas, organise social activities and provide networking opportunities. We can also connect you with chaplaincy services, faith groups and other cultural associations. Manchester is a vibrant, cultural and lively city, with its associations with world-class football, music and food. Whether it's recommendations on local live music gigs, or the best local cuisine, we offer information to help you settle.

Navigating your work environment

As one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK, with over 28,000 staff, having a thorough induction will support your experience. You will receive a clear and in-depth introduction to your hospital, department and how the Trust operates. You are encouraged to join and participate in staff networks, professional forums and alumni activities.

Peer Buddy network (fellows only)

All fellows are matched with a trained peer buddy, which will help you build connections and share expertise. Our peer buddy network allows for the 'pairing' of experienced International Medical Graduate doctors with new international doctors at the Trust. These help new colleagues to understand workplace culture, facilitate social rooting and answer any day-to-day questions that a new doctor might have.

Continuous practical and well-being support

Prioritising your well-being to ensure you thrive and maximise your experience is important. You’ll have regular one-to-one check-ins with a member of our team to ensure you are continually getting the correct clinical and personal support to deal with challenges you may face promptly. Access to a variety of other wellbeing and safety information is available during your stay with us, to ensure your comfort.

Ongoing alumni engagement

Your placement is just the beginning of your professional development. You will be invited to a friendly and reflective review meeting and offered guidance to prepare for your next career steps. You will receive an official certificate to recognise your contribution to Manchester Specialist Hospitals, and confirming your dates of placement. You will join our global alumni community, helping you stay connected to our wider Manchester community, wherever your journey takes you.
