Advancing expertise through fellowship

Fellowships at Manchester Specialist Health Academy offer international clinicians structured, high-quality training in advanced subspecialties. Fellows receive consultant-led supervision, a thorough induction and guided pastoral support, and access to modern facilities, alongside opportunities for social activities and immersion in local culture.

Training is tailored to individual interests, with exposure to procedures, multidisciplinary clinics, and research projects. Fellows can contribute to audits and quality improvement initiatives, with opportunities to present at national and international conferences. This programme combines clinical excellence with a supportive environment, making it an attractive choice for professional development.

Our fee structure is simple and transparent. And we packed it into a single fee which is the sum of 2 parts:

  • Salary costs at an NHS-equivalent level, reflecting that Fellows will join in roles aligned to NHS standards
  • £21,500 to the Fellowship scheme per annum.

Feel free to ask us about the specific salary costs that would be suitable to your equivalent NHS role. This will be based on the level of the role you are placed into.

Fellows should have a confirmed sponsor.

We offer a range of specialised Fellowships, each with its own prospectus detailing the specialty, Manchester’s unique strengths, hands-on experience, research opportunities, and the team you’ll join. Each prospectus also outlines the specific learning outcomes we’ll help you achieve.

Applying for placements across the world can be challenging, so we have a simple 3-step guide. We'll be here with you every step of the way.

Eligibility

Demand for our fellowships is exceptionally high, and we welcome applications from exceptional clinicians who can demonstrate meeting the following criteria.

  • Postgraduate Qualification: Applicants must hold an overseas-recognised postgraduate medical qualification (MD, MS, Masters) in the relevant specialty.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ recent experience in the specialty (or a related specialty) within the last 5 years, including at least 12 months of continuous practice before applying.
  • Training Level: Equivalent to ST5 or above, or post-CCT clinicians seeking subspecialty exposure.
  • Language Proficiency: IELTS Academic with 7.0 in each band and overall 7.5, or OET Medicine with Grade B in all domains (certificate valid within 24 months).
  • Registration: GMC registration is required. We can support with sponsorship if needed.
  • Other
    • Must not have failed PLAB exams previously.
    • Visa sponsorship only through approved routes; self-funded visas outside agreed schemes are excluded.

Duration

Our fellowships are designed as immersive experiences, typically lasting 12 to 24 months. This extended time frame ensures fellows gain in-depth exposure to a broad spectrum of subspecialty practice, from complex inpatient care to advanced procedures, multidisciplinary clinics, and research projects.

By staying longer, fellows develop confidence, refine skills, and experience the full cycle of patient care and service delivery.
