Royal Manchester Children's Hospital
Paediatric General Medicine at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital
Paediatric General Medicine at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital provides general paediatric services for the local population in Manchester. The service assesses acutely unwell children referred by GPs or the Paediatric Emergency Department, supports diagnosis and initial treatment, and manages admission where hospital care is required.
Observers and fellows will gain structured exposure to acute and ambulatory paediatrics within a large children's hospital environment. The programme provides opportunities to understand how general paediatric teams assess common and complex presentations, coordinate inpatient care, and work with community nursing teams to support safe management at home wherever appropriate.
Clinical exposure may include acute referrals, inpatient ward care, outpatient reviews for common paediatric medical conditions, rapid access clinics for urgent outpatient referrals, prolonged jaundice pathways, and liaison with primary care through consultant-led advice arrangements.
The service includes special interest clinics in diabetes, epilepsy, renal problems and rheumatology. General paediatric consultants also contribute to wider RMCH services including safeguarding, chronic fatigue, trauma, undergraduate teaching and postgraduate education.
The wider RMCH environment strengthens the learning experience through access to a broad range of paediatric specialties, multidisciplinary working, and the Manchester Clinical Research Facility at RMCH, which delivers complex early-phase and experimental medicine research across paediatric disease areas.
Fellowships and observerships at Manchester Specialist Health Academy provide international clinicians with structured opportunities to experience high quality healthcare training within a leading NHS environment. Both pathways offer consultant oversight, a clear induction, and access to modern clinical settings that support a strong understanding of advanced patient care. Participants are welcomed into a professional community that encourages learning, collaboration, and engagement with the culture of Manchester.
While fellows take part in more in depth clinical development, gaining exposure to subspecialties, procedures and research, observers focus on shadowing and understanding multidisciplinary practice within NHS services. Both groups benefit from involvement in clinics, team discussions, and wider learning activities such as simulation sessions, CPD opportunities, and quality improvement insight.

Rare and complex cases
Observers and fellows may observe children whose care requires coordination across acute paediatrics, subspecialty teams, community nursing, safeguarding, surgery, trauma, chronic fatigue services and outpatient pathways.
The service is particularly relevant for learning how a general paediatric team manages diagnostic uncertainty, escalation decisions, safe admission, discharge planning, and shared care for children with complex medical or social needs.
Examples of learning themes include acute presentations referred from primary care or the Paediatric Emergency Department, inpatient input for children under surgical teams, children with complex care needs, prolonged jaundice pathways, urgent outpatient referrals, and common paediatric medical conditions requiring specialist review or onward referral.
