Paediatric Ophthalmology at Machester Royal Eye Hospital
Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) is a large specialist ophthalmic teaching hospital affiliated to the University of Manchester Medical School based on Oxford Road Campus. There are 5 Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologists at MREH providing major sub-specialist services in a large ophthalmology centre with strong links to the adjacent Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. The placements with Paediatric Ophthalmology offer wide clinical exposure in the management of paediatric eye disease, including paediatric cataract, strabismus, paediatric glaucoma, paediatric neuro-ophthalmology, paediatric uveitis, paediatric cornea, genetic eye disease and retinopathy of prematurity. There will be experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment through close liaison with the orthoptists, optometrists, paediatricians including paediatric rheumatologists and geneticists.
Our team includes consultant ophthalmologists who are specialists in diagnosing and treating children and young people’s eye problems, Nurses, Orthoptists and Optometrists; as well as support from Henshaws Society for Blind People.
We also have an Eye Clinic Liaison Officer who can help parents to contact specialist support services for their children in the community and nearer their home.
Paediatric Ophthalmology is currently open to fellows but not accepting observerships.
Fellowships and observerships at Manchester Specialist Health Academy provide international clinicians with structured opportunities to experience high quality healthcare training within a leading NHS environment. Both pathways offer consultant oversight, a clear induction, and access to modern clinical settings that support a strong understanding of advanced patient care. Participants are welcomed into a professional community that encourages learning, collaboration, and engagement with the culture of Manchester.
While fellows take part in more in depth clinical development, gaining exposure to subspecialties, procedures and research, observers focus on shadowing and understanding multidisciplinary practice within NHS services. Both groups benefit from involvement in clinics, team discussions, and wider learning activities such as simulation sessions, CPD opportunities, and quality improvement insight.
